Beyond the North East

Fall 2007 ISSUE:

Most Quarter Horse people consider the boundaries of the Quarter Horse world to extend from New England to Texas. But they would be wrong. As Art O’Brien, and instructor at the University of Findlay, found out, the QH world extends across the Atlantic. Art O‘Brien and four of his students took their knowledge and expertise global, thanks to a grant from the AQHA’s International Horsemanship Program. With the grant, Mr. O’Brien’s team spent three weeks in July traveling across Europe hosting multi-day clinics in order to educate the riders in the American Quarter Horse ways.

Hobby or BusinessHobby or Business?

by Heather Lange
SUMMER 2007 ISSUE:

For many of us, we spend as much time with our horses as we do at work. We work to have our horse and we don’t really want to know how much we actually spend on our horse related-activities each year. But what if those expenses were deductible on your income tax return? The IRS permits a deduction against income for “ordinary and necessary” business expenses if the expenses are part of a trade or business. This means that to the extent that the expenses of your business exceed the income, the excess can be used to offset other income reported on your tax return. But is your passion for horses more than a hobby? When does it become a business?

WINTER 2005/2006 ISSUE:

Just minutes Doug Landrethafter judging his last class at his final show we had the priviledge to ask questions and talk with highly respected AQHA Judge, Mr. Doug Landreth. As a judge for 42 years and an AQHA judge for 28 years, Mr. Doug Landreth has been a very familiar face in the show pen through out the North East. Landreth started judging horses for the excitement, traveling, seeing horses and people, and expanding his horizons across the country, and even other parts of the world. Landreth often times tried to take a few extra days before and after judging just to see the sights in the areas he visited. Some of his excursions include flying in a pontoon plane over Alaska and seeing moose, fishing, enjoying the people he came in contact with, and the sights of the area. Another trip was to South America, which was quite different than judging in this country. Definitely having an armed guard by his side from the time he got off the plane until the time he got back on would make judging in South America a memorable experience!
